From the late 19th century, French and international artists came to work in Pont-Aven. The group later known as the Pont-Aven School explored bold colour, simplified forms and a new, more expressive way of depicting Brittany.
Paul Gauguin, Émile Bernard, Paul Sérusier and Charles Filiger are among the major names associated with this movement.
